Citizenship Teaching Module This module is a series of five lesson plans created to assist B.C. teachers in educating students on the importance of citizenship. Its purpose is to promote in students a desire to become educated, active and involved citizens through introduction to citizenship concepts and information as to how they may participate in issues that affect their daily lives.

Copyright Matters This booklet gives teachers user-friendly information on copyright law, combining items from the Canadian Copyright Act and its regulations, contractual and tariff arrangements with copyright collectives, and court decisions.

Correctional Service of Canada - Public Awareness This page provides material which contains straightforward, factual information on Correctional Services Canada programs and services . It offers interesting information more about correctional issues, as well as officials who need material for speaking engagements or other public outreach activities: Speakers Bureau: an innovative tool that will enable Canadians, community groups, and other organizations to search a database for speakers in their communities; Parole and Community Corrections ; Definitions of Terms ; Speakers Binder: a quick reference to assist in preparing speeches and presentations on the activities of the Correctional Service of Canada.

Courts of BC This website is created by Law Courts Education Society of BC. This website has different videos to introduce and explain the different law courts systems in BC. This website also includes teacher's guide and handouts for students. This is intended for high school students.

Courts of Nova Scotia - Courtrooms and Classrooms Program For teachers the Courtrooms and Classrooms Project consists of three elements:
• arrange for students to observe a court in session
• challenge students to explore the Virtual Courtroom online. Use the teacher's guide for tips on classroom activities
• request that a judge assist with a mock trial.


Cultivating Peace The goal of the Cultivating Peace initiative is to create classroom-ready resources for schools across Canada that will assist teachers and community leaders to educate for change. The programs created through this initiative will encourage youth to respect diversity, think globally, value human rights, recognize injustice and respond to conflict with methods other than violence. These resources will engage children and youth in the search for a culture of peace in their homes, their schools, their neighbourhoods and their global community.

Education is our Buffalo - A Teachers' Resource for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education in Alberta As part of its ongoing commitment to public education and to the professional development of teachers, the Alberta Teachers’ Association regularly develops resource materials. Education Is Our Buffalo: A Teachers’ Resource for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education in Alberta is one such resource. In addressing the particular needs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit teachers and learners, this collection of materials sheds light on issues of diversity, equity and human rights as they touch the day-to-day life in Alberta schools and society. Equality: the heart of a just society This site celebrates the 20th anniversary of Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Section 15 marked a milestone in Canada’s evolution as a nation by making equality rights a permanent part of our constitution.

Exploring Humanitarian Law Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an international education programme for young people between the ages of 13 and 18. A resource pack for teachers, EHL provides 30 hours of activities that introduce young people to the basic rules of international humanitarian law (IHL).

Grandpa Lives With Us: An ESL Curriculum on Seniors and their Families This unit deals with how we treat our older family members, how our children will treat us as we age. It presents scenarios for consideration, to raise awareness of the hidden problems facing families adapting to a new culture. Contains multilevel lesson plan and activity outlines; group, class, individual activities; grammar, functional English; and reproducible illustrations. Healthy Relationships - Violence Prevention Curriculum Healthy Relationships was developed by a community-group, Men for Change, in Halifax as a response to the massacre of 14 women engineering students in Montreal, Quebec in 1989. This program for grades 7 through 9 is currently used by schools, women’s shelters, social welfare agencies, and health, detention, youth and counselling centres in Canada and the United States. Helps students to analyze the culture of violence that condones abusive behavior is the first step towards empowering them to create the violence-free culture of tomorrow. Human Rights Education Project This is a project of the Alberta Civil Liberties Association. It provides teachers of secondary school students or a student in junior or senior high school with handbooks and manuals. Site includes a sample lesson on the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack: Beyond Blame.

Human Rights in Canada: A historical perspective The Canadian Human Rights Commission website on the evolution of human rights in 20th Century Canada. Explores the key court cases and laws that have shaped human rights in our country since 1900.

Human Rights Tools Human Rights Tools is nonprofit organisation established in 2006 and based in Switzerland. This site is a collection of web resources primarily aimed at human rights activists - persons monitoring the respect of human rights and advocating for positive change.

Internet 101 - Internet Safety Tools Internet 101 is a collaborative project between police forces in the National Capital Region. They have also developed a toolkit for educators. Kit101: An Educator's Guide to Internet Safety is a combination of dynamic presentations, helpful cue cards and a handbook, which may assist you with the toolkit materials. The presentations are designed for both small and large audiences, and can be tailored to your specific requirements in promoting Internet safety among youth and parents.

Kids in the Know Kids in the Know is a safety curriculum designed to empower children and reduce their risk of victimization. It focuses on building self-esteem through teaching critical problem-solving skills. The program uses an inclusive, community-based approach to heighten safety awareness. The core premise of the curriculum is based on key root safety strategies and environments which are reinforced and practiced throughout every grade level.

Kids in the Know - Billy Brings his Buddies Children who are alone have a greater risk of being harmed. Using the Buddy System is one way children can reduce their vulnerability to victimization. This interactive site will help children to learn about the Buddy System, along with lesson plan for teachers to use in their classroom.

Law Courts Education Society of British Columbia The society is a non-profit organization providing educational programs and services about the justice system in Canada and British Columbia. Their function is twofold in that they help the public understand how our justice system works and also help those people working within the system to better understand the justice-related issues that different people in our communities face. The society provides information for the public, including students and life-long learners.

Minors and Contract Law - Teacher Information Sheet   

MPTV MPTV is an educational resource designed to introduce students to the House of Commons and the role of its elected members. This resource includes a video classroom activities and supporting teacher materials. This resource is suggested for Grades 4 to 6 (Primary cycles 2 and 3 in Quebec).

Nature's Laws - Resources The Nature's Laws Project was developed in a partnership involving the Heritage Community Foundation and representatives of First Nations from Treaty 6, 7 and 8. The project is a study of the legal codes and traditional governance of Alberta’s First Nations in the areas covered by Treaties 6, 7 and 8.  It was structured as having research and public education components and involved Elders, academics and legal historians.  The material examined was evidence found in oral histories, as well as case law, and the scholarly literature relating to Aboriginal People.

No-Means-No Program The NO MEANS NO for Teens is an education project designed to raise awareness among young people aged 11 to 14 (grades 7 to 9) about sexual assault, consent, power dynamics, equality rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is developed by LEAF ( Women's Legal Education and Action Fund), a national, non-profit organization committed to using the provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to promote equality for women.

Ontario Justice Education Network Funded by The Law Foundation of Ontario and supported by the Law Society of Upper Canada and its other participants, OJEN is a forum for leading institutions and individuals from the legal, education and other sectors, to work together on initiatives designed to foster the public’s understanding of our justice system. It supports popular programs such as ”Courtrooms and Classrooms,” which, through a network of local education committees, is reaching many thousands of students around the province.

Ontario Justice Education Network - Resources OJEN is a forum for leading institutions and individuals from the legal, education and other sectors, to work together on initiatives designed to foster the public’s understanding of our justice system. It supports popular programs such as ”Courtrooms and Classrooms,” which, through a network of local education committees, is reaching many thousands of students around the province. Resource page provides links to materials which have been developed for teachers teaching law, and for judges, lawyers and other justice sector volunteers when speaking with students. This section also includes reference materials such as selected speeches and articles relating to the justice system, which can be used as educational tools.

Peace Works PEI PeaceWorks PEI is a non-profit, community-based organization, representing a partnership between families, educators, conflict resolution organizations and organizations committed to the prevention of family violence. The goal of PeaceWorks is to reduce violence in our communities through the teaching of non-violent conflict resolution skills to children, parents, teachers and communities.

People's Law School - Publications Provides legal information on a variety of topics in plain language to the people of British Columbia. The People's Law School also organize events including presentations by the Provincial Innovations Program (PIP), Justice Theatre presentations to BC schools, and free volunteer speaker placements on law-related issues for community groups.

Safe and Caring Research Link Safe and Caring Research Link is a virtual forum where individuals and organizations share their knowledge, understanding, and expertise on violence and bullying prevention, conflict resolution, anger management, positive decision making skills, youth resiliency and building safe and caring and inclusive schools and communities. The SACSC Research Centre is the joint initiative of the University of Alberta's Faculty of Education and Society for Safe and Caring Schools and Communities.

School-based violence prevention programs: preventing violence against children and youth (2005 revision) This resource was originally developed to identify school-based programs that prevent violence against girls and young women, the primary targets of much abuse including dating violence, sexual assault and sexual harassment. This resource manual also presents school-based violence prevention programs that are relevant for girls and boys, young women and young men. The manual provides practical research- and expert-based information on school-based programs to prevent interpersonal violence. The 2005 revision broadened the ages for which programs were developed to both preschool and university/college programs. New sections were added on general child abuse, children exposed to domestic violence, children/youth with disabilities and children/youth from Aboriginal backgrounds.

STOP! Dating violence among adolescents This program is used extensively in the province of Quebec. STOP is aimed at students in grades 10 to 12. The themes are compatible with personal and social education courses, as well as religious and moral religious education courses.

Supreme Court of Canada - Educational Portal Provides information on the Court about tours, educational kits, mock trials, youth activity book

Teachers' Rights: Dealing with Harassment by Students, Parents and other Adults The pamphlet covers some of the common harassment problems being reported by teachers in New Brunswick, and explains legislation and policies intended to protect teaching staff from these types of incidents. The pamphlet provides tips for teachers who are dealing with harassment both inside and outside the classroom, and explains where to turn for help.

Teaching about Justice, Rights and Responsibilities Teacher resource materials developed to support Alberta high school teachers in educating their students about the justice system in Alberta and Canada. It addresses five areas of law within the Canadian judicial system: constitutional, aboriginal, criminal, civil and family, and youth. The resource is a valuable, Alberta-focused supplement to the current Grade 10 Social Studies curriculum and provides lesson plans and other material in an easy-to-use format for teachers.

The League of Peaceful Schools Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan (PLEA) introduced a pilot version of the League of Peaceful Schools in Saskatchewan in 1999. The League provides support and recognition to schools that have declared a commitment to creating and maintaining safe and peaceful environments. The League strives to promote equity of opportunity and networking among schools, help reduce violence and punitive discipline measures, and support at-risk students.

The Wall Workshop: Women Changing Today's Economy The Wall Workshop is an educational tool designed to do a gender analysis of the global economy starting with women’s experiences. It has been used by women’s organizations, trade unions, and community groups, professional and religious organizations in countries around the globe. Here you will find an introduction to the methodology; experiences people have had facilitating Wall workshops, how to order guides and suggestions for adapting the methodology to your situation.

There's something about money Financial information for youth provided by the Canadian Bankers Association. Information is available online for parents and teachers. The Resource Guide presents a comprehensive and searchable listing of the YourMoney Network web resources geared to the financial education of young Canadians, and is intended to assist teachers, parents and students seeking accurate and complete on-line information.

Youth and Schools (Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan) PLEA offers a wide range of resources for teaching law in the classroom, such as lesson plans,  instruction guides, mock trial kits and publications. As well as "School Law", an initiative of the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan ( PLEA ), The Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Bar Association (Saskatchewan Branch) and the Courts Communication Office, which puts volunteer lawyers and judges into classrooms to speak on a variety of topics.

Youth and the Law (Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia) The site has information about the Youth Criminal Justice Act. It lets you look inside the workings of the legal process and provides links to resources for youth justice in Nova Scotia. Materials available for use by teachers within the classroom.

Youth Justice in New Brunswick Hosted by the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick this site's purpose is:
* To provide information about the federal Youth Justice Renewal Initiative;

* To share resources to help communities engage in a discussion of youth justice issues and youth crime prevention;
