PLE organizations can be found in every province and territory in Canada and each one sets their own mandate, goals and means of delivering information. We have gathered the key organizations together here for your convenience.

Community Legal Education Association of Manitoba (CLEA) Community Legal Education Association is a not-for-profit organization, which provides Manitobans with information about the law through several services. We have existed since 1984 and we believe that law belongs to people - you have a right to know your rights. The Association offers a variety of community programs one of which is the School's Program (Speakers in the Classroom, Youth Criminal Justice Act Teaching Kit and Mock Trial Kits). You can order pamphlets, booklets, and education kits on legal topics from the Association.

Community Legal Education Ontario CLEO is a community legal clinic that produces clear language material for people with low incomes. Main topics include social assistance, landlord and tenant law, refugee and immigration law, workers' compensation, women's issues, family law, employment insurance and human rights.

Community Legal Information Association Of Prince Edward Island (CLIAPEI) The Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island, Inc. (CLIA) is a non-profit corporation and a registered charity. Its work is called public legal education. CLIA's goal is to provide Islanders with understandable, useful information about our laws and our justice system. CLIA's work is a co-operative effort by members of community groups, lawyers' associations, government departments and interested members of the general public.

Justice Education Society- BC Established in 1989 as the Law Courts Education Society, the Justice Education Society is dedicated to improving access to the justice system through hands-on, targeted, two-way education between the public and those working in the system. This commitment is embodied in our tagline, “Justice through Knowledge.” As a non-profit organization with ongoing public and private sector financial and volunteer support, we offer a unique and comprehensive collection of justice-related educational services and effectively work towards creating a justice system that is accessible to all.

Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia The Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia (LISNS) is a non-profit organization that provides Nova Scotians with information and resources about the law. The Legal Information Society programs include: a legal information line and lawyer referral service (toll free in Nova Scotia); publications (pamphlets/booklets/videos); Dial-a-Law (pre-recorded legal information); a speakers bureau.

Legal Services Society of British Columbia The Legal Services Society of British Columbia is an independent, non-profit organization, created by statute. Its mandate is to foster public legal education and provide effective legal services to low income B.C. residents, particularly those people experiencing legal problems that threaten their liberty, security, and livelihood.

Ontario Justice Education Network Funded by The Law Foundation of Ontario and supported by the Law Society of Upper Canada and its other participants, OJEN is a forum for leading institutions and individuals from the legal, education and other sectors, to work together on initiatives designed to foster the public’s understanding of our justice system. It supports popular programs such as ”Courtrooms and Classrooms,” which, through a network of local education committees, is reaching many thousands of students around the province.

People's Law School Provides legal information on a variety of topics in plain language to the people of British Columbia. The People's Law School also organize events including presentations by the Provincial Innovations Program (PIP), Justice Theatre presentations to BC schools, and free volunteer speaker placements on law-related issues for community groups.

Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick PLEIS-NB is a non-profit organization and a registered charity. Our mandate is to develop a variety of bilingual educational products and services about the law for the public in order to promote access to the legal system. The goal is to assist the public in identifying and understanding their legal rights and responsibilities with a view to improving their ability to deal with legal matters.

Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan The Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan (PLEA) is a non-profit, non-government organization that exists to educate and inform the people of Saskatchewan about the law and legal system.

Public Legal Education Network of Alberta (PLENA) is a board governed, executive office managed network of over 30 agencies, organizations and individuals united by their common interest in public legal education and information (plei). Most of PLENA's members are involved wholly or at least in part in direct delivery of plei services to the public on a not-for-profit basis.


Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland (PLIAN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about legal issues. We offer many different services including: Information Sessions/Speaker's Bureau - Through these sessions, PLIAN is able to provide the public with information on particular legal issues. Over the past year, the focus has been the Child Support Guidelines and the Youth Justice Renewal Initiative. Links to online information on bankruptcy, careers in law, criminal justice, family law, youth justice, wills and estates, landlord and tenant, to name just a few.

Yukon Public Legal Education Association (YPLEA) The Yukon Public Legal Education Association (YPLEA) is a non-profit organization devoted to providing legal information to the public and promoting increased access to the legal system. The goal of the Association is to help the public to identify and understand their legal rights and responsibilities in order to improve their ability to deal with legal matters.
