Canadian Security
June 15, 2006

On December 18, 2001 the Anti-Terrorism Act (Bill C-36 and Bill C-42) became part of the Criminal Code of Canada. The Act, created in response to the events of September 11, 2001, has (according to then-justice minister Anne McLellan) three objectives:

  • suppress existing terrorist groups;
  • provide police with new investigative tools;
  • and toughen up prison sentences for terrorists.

    With the recent arrests of 17 men and youth for allegedly plotting to blow up Canadian national landmarks, the issue of Canadian security has come once again to the forefront of the Canadian consciousness.

    This week the Supreme Court of Canada began hearing arguments on security certificates to decide whether the certificates violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Newspapers have been reporting all week about the strength and teeth of the anti-terror laws in Canada, while organizations like the Canadian Bar Association have issued press releases reiterating their position to oppose portions of the Criminal Code that place police officers and their agents above the law.
