What we collect
Our server logs http requests. The log captures computer information, navigation and click-stream data such as the originating IP address of the computer. We do not attempt to identify the individual using the computer.
Individuals may choose to submit personal information (name, location) when they decide to use the feedback or submit portions of the site.

How we use it
Aggregate data is used in site administration, planning and security. We use the data to ensure that our site is robust enough to handle the traffic and to understand which of our resource pathways are most used.

Disclosing information
Visitor’s personal (name, location) information will not be disclosed to anyone except ACJNet staff who might need the information to respond to requests. Individuals sending requests for information will be deemed to have given permission for their request to be addressed by someone at ACJNet or at one of our affiliate services.

All links to other sites are reviewed according to a set of standards. However, once the user follows a link and leaves our site, we cannot guarantee the quality of other links from the new site.

LINK SELECTION CRITERIA

Sites are selected primarily from

  • Canadian federal department sites;
  • Provincial government sites;
  • Canadian non-profit and professional law-related organizations;
  • Educational institutions and libraries;
  • Canadian law offices; and
  • Corporate sites that offer valid legal information for Canadians.

When considering the inclusion of a site on ACJNet, several questions are asked within various categories to determine its suitability.

Scope
Is the site aimed at the Canadian public? legal professions? Are there warnings regarding the use of the site? Is there a stated purpose?

Content
Does the site have information other than a collection of links? Does the site have information other than "corporate" data? Is the site Canadian? If not, is the information relevant to Canadians? Is the site content historical or current or both? Are the links rated or annotated? Are the links maintained? If it is a commercial site, are advertising rates accessible? Is the site unique? Is it inflammatory? Does the site provide a way for users to contact the webmaster such as email?

Currency
Is the site regularly updated? If the site does not have an updating schedule, when was the last time that the site was updated?

Organization
Is the site easy to navigate? Are graphics crucial to navigating the site?

Authority
Is it possible to determine the reputation of the sponsor or creator? Is contact information available? Is any sort of bias evident?

Availability
Is the site stable? I.e., can connection be made easily? Does the site load quickly?
If it is an electronic journal, is it full text or table of contents only? Are there fee-based services? If so, the abstract for the entry will alert the user to that fact.

POLLING POLICIES

Content
The questions posted to the site will reflect current issues in the news, new and pending legislation, and specific topics in law, e.g., family law, real estate law.

Questions for the poll can be suggested by other public legal education organizations, or by the public.

Background information about the poll topic will be provided to assist users in location additional information about the issue.

Results
Results for current and past poll questions will be available on the site for a minimum of one year after the posting period.

Comments submitted in response to the question are monitored and may be edited if they are contrary to site policies and standards. When comments are edited, a note will be added to the comment to indicated that editing has occurred.
