You and the Law: Older Adults & Seniors Planning for the Future
June 13, 2008
Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of Albertan and Canadian populations – seniors make up 10% of Alberta’s population and by 2031, one in five Albertans will be a senior. Legal information for Alberta seniors is scarce and scattered and much of it is not in plain language or in accessible formats. At the same time, Albertans (including the growing senior population) are increasingly seeking information about law and justice issues that relate to their lives.
This project is a partnership of the Legal Resource Centre and Strathcona County and Fort Saskatchewan Public Libraries and is funded by the Public Library Development Initiative (PLDI) Project program. The project focuses on the legal information needs of older adults/seniors and will improve public library service delivery of legal information from Strathcona County Library (SCL) and Fort Saskatchewan Public Library (FSPL)
The project will:
· present a series of training sessions for librarians and public presentations for library patrons;
· create several information tools (including booklets, tipsheets, bibliographies) specifically targeted towards for seniors, their families, those organizations who work with them, and public libraries.
Legal Topics include:
· Residential Tenancies and Housing
· Consumer Protection
· Planning for the Future (Wills, Personal Directives, Powers of Attorney)
· Grandparents’ Rights
